Mall Kiosk Design: Four Kiosks from Concept to a Built Unit in Sunway Pyramid

Mall kiosk design is among the hardest retail work per square metre, and it is where a good drawing set pays for itself fastest. Four kiosks by Kenania, for food, perfume, gaming and chocolate, show the method and one built result.

A kiosk is one of the hardest retail briefs per square metre. It has no walls and four fronts, a mall landlord with a design manual, and a few seconds to be understood by someone walking past. The four kiosks below show how we handle that brief, and one of them is built and trading.

Zaitoun, Sunway Pyramid, Kuala Lumpur (built)

A Mediterranean food kiosk in mint green, with an illuminated canopy sign, a chilled display counter and back-bar shelving. We designed it to Sunway Pyramid’s tenant guidelines and took it through drawing submission, landlord approval and fabrication. The first photograph shows the finished unit on the mall floor; the second shows the island version of the design visualised in a mall atrium.

Ghreiwati Perfumes, Dubai

Ghreiwati Perfumes, a new retailer opening in prime retail addresses across Dubai and the UAE, needed an island unit with the feel of a boutique. Dark timber beams frame backlit niches for each fragrance house, around a central display with lockable cabinets below. For a second mall with a lighter design code, we developed a white lacquer alternative.

Gaming kiosk

For a gaming brand we treated the kiosk as a single sculptural object: faceted red-and-gold panels, LED strips and the brand emblem over the entrance. It is designed for an atrium, where people see it from the upper floors as often as from the ground.

Chocolate kiosk

A small chocolate counter with a canopy sculpted as dripping chocolate, visualised in a park and on a street at night. We designed it together with a logo for the Felt & Melt brand, so the kiosk and the identity were developed as one piece of work.

Mall kiosk design starts with the landlord’s manual

Before any material is chosen, a kiosk has to satisfy the landlord. The tenant design manual fixes the maximum height, the clear zone around the unit, how far a canopy may project, where the signage band sits and which finishes are allowed on the mall floor. The operator’s questions come next: how many staff serve at once, what needs chilling or locking, where the till and the card reader go, and how the unit is cleaned. The shopper comes last, and gives the unit about three seconds from the walkway.

We put all of this into one submission: a plan and four elevations at 1:20, sections through the counter, a materials board, an electrical layout and a signage detail. The four kiosks here were designed for different landlords and products, and each one started from that same list. That is why a mall kiosk design submission from our office is usually approved in a single review.

How the product shapes the kiosk

Food needs a chilled display on the customer side and surfaces that wipe clean, so the Zaitoun unit puts both behind a marble edge. Perfume needs backlit shelf length and lockable stock, and the Ghreiwati island turns its shelves into lit niches. A gaming kiosk has to photograph well and hold demo stations, which is why the Armageddon pavilion became a faceted shell. Chocolate sells with some theatre at the counter, and the Felt & Melt canopy is sculpted as dripping chocolate. In each case the form of the kiosk came from the product it sells.

From approval to fabrication

The Zaitoun kiosk went from submission to trading in a few weeks because its drawings were ready for fabrication. Panel sizes stayed within sheet dimensions, the steel base frame was drawn for overnight installation, and every power point was located on the plan. A mall kiosk design drawn to that level opens on the date written in the lease.
